Frequently asked questions

What is Broccoly?

Broccoly turns a photo of your grocery receipt into a clear picture of what you ate and what you spent. It matches each item to public food data so you can see nutrition grades (like Nutri-Score), how processed a product is (NOVA), and its environmental score (Eco-Score), plus spending insights over time.

How does scanning work?

You take a photo of a receipt. Broccoly reads the text and figures out the line items directly on your device using Apple's on-device intelligence. Importantly, the receipt photo never leaves your phone. Only the resulting item names (and price) are sent to our matching service to look up product information.

Is my data private? Where is it stored?

Your receipt information is sensitive. The items parsed from your receipts and your history are stored locally on your device, encrypted. The receipt photo itself is never saved. Broccoly has no user accounts and never asks for your name, email, or login. To match products, we send only the parsed item text (and the store/country, if known) to our server; that request is processed and then automatically deleted. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.

Do I need an account?

No. Broccoly works without any sign-up or login.

A product matched incorrectly, or is missing, what can I do?

Product data comes from Open Food Facts, a community database, so matches aren't always perfect. When a match looks wrong, Broccoly shows alternative candidates you can pick from. If a product is missing entirely, it may simply not be in the database yet.

You can help make everyone's shopping better by becoming an Open Food Fact contributor. Just donwload the Open Food Facts app and start scanning items!

What do Nutri-Score, NOVA, and Eco-Score mean?

These come from Open Food Facts. You can read more about how they're calculated on the Open Food Facts site.

Which countries and stores are supported?

Broccoly works best in regions well covered by Open Food Facts. currently strongest across Europe (e.g. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and neighbours). It can read receipts from many stores; matching quality depends on how clearly the receipt is printed and how well the products are represented in the database.

How do I delete my data?

Because everything is stored locally, deleting the app removes all of your receipts and history from your device. Matching requests sent to our server are temporary and deleted automatically — we don't keep a profile of you.

Does Broccoly cost anything?

No, the app is enitrely free and does not have hidden costs.
